There has been a folk festival in the beautiful market town of Beverley every year since 1983, hosting countless legendary performances by hundreds of artists, helping to create the flourishing live music scene we have in the town today, and putting our town very much on the map.
Sadly in 2018 the festival was cancelled, but we —a small group of enthusiasts—carried on the event under the name 'Beverley Fringe'. (A 'Fringe' event always happened in the town alongside the main festival). With only three months' notice, we made a festival happen that year and then went on to win 'Outstanding Small Festival' from the Yorkshire Gig Guide for the event!
After delivering four successful festivals (one completely online in 2020—harder than it sounds read all about it!) we decided to change the name to Beverley Folk Festival for the 2022 event and festivals thereafter.
Beverley Folk Festival is a not-for-profit organisation, reinvesting profits directly back into the event. We donate the proceeds from our annual 'Buskathon' to a local charity each year--the record being £777.77 (yes!) for The East Riding Food Bank in 2021!
We believe passionately in supporting the local music scene (and are involved with music events in the town all year round), providing a platform for upcoming and aspiring musicians, and we try to do all we can to inspire and encourage young people into music. In 2022, we introduced an education programme which we hope to build further in subsequent years.
Each year we present a varied programme of ticketed and free events, open 'jam' sessions, and workshops.
Being a folk festival at heart, folk dance is also a big part of our event, and we typically welcome at least a dozen teams—from Morris to Rapper to Clog and everything in-between— from across the country to the festival each year to take part in our parade and dance in various locations across town.
Whether 'folk' isn't usually your thing, you want a late night party, or you're a musician just looking to play wit others, we like to think there is something on offer each year for everyone.
The festival is a town-based, multi-venue festival. All venues are within walking distance but there is a good local bus service and taxis a-plenty.
We are always keen to hear from people interested in volunteering with the festival; please get in touch today if this sounds like you!
Thank you, and we can't wait to welcome you to beautiful Beverley in June!
